Regarding the M-1A1 Tank

It is written up in Dunnigan & Bay's book, _From Shield to Storm_.
To paraphrase:

An M-1A1 from the 24th Mech. Infantry was bogged down in a marsh,
and left for the following recovery vehicles. Three T-72's showed
up first. The bogged M-1A1 took two 125mm HEAT and one 125mm sabot
rounds on its frontal armor (the sabot from 400m!), none of which
penetrated. It destroyed all three, the last by firing a shot
*through* a sand berm. (The crew could tell where the Iraqi tank
was because they could see a radio antenna.)

When help arrived, the Abrams was so stuck that two M-88's couldn't
pull it out. Rather than leave it behind, it was decided to destroy
it. Since they lacked explosive charges, they had several other
M-1A1's fire on it. Two rounds failed to penetrate and a third only
set off the ammo, which vented out through the top panels.

At this point, two more M-88's arrived and they were able to pull it
free. Everything still worked, except the sights which were damaged
by the explosion.
