Well, it seems that we aren't going to get a Seattle GT this year. Instead, Vancouver BC is getting one in October. I think I'm going to try and go. I spent a few minutes checking out ways to get up there. It turns out that a plane ride is about $250 and takes a couple of hours. A bus ride is about 12 hours long and goes for $40 (plus, a friend goes along for free). A train is about 8 hours, and $70. No obvious winner there. Maybe I can scare up a ride, or even
Sean gave me a demo of Chainmail today. We played a quick game using the models that come in the starter set. What a fun game! I really liked it -- it felt like you'd expect a D&D miniatures game to feel. It's a skirmish game, typically running about a half-dozen figures a side. Each model has a corresponding card that describes it's statistics and special powers, so keeping track of stuff as a beginner is easy. The combat system itself feels very D&D3, the only major complication being the command structure. The typical unit can do very few things by itself (usually limited to run up to the nearest enemy and hack at it); it takes a leader, who spends command points, to drive the unit to perform fancy maneuvers. I'm gonna buy it, and probably a bunch of miniatures to go with. Finally, have you seen the Doompaloompahs? John brought them to my attention, and I must say they are impressive! You should check them out.
